A former teacher at Calhoun High School has pleaded guilty to making a threat to destroy the school. 36 year old Michelle L. Smith of Jerseyville entered the plea in U.S. District Court on Tuesday of conveying a false threat. She made the threat through a typewritten note found in a ladies restroom on April 28. Smith was arrested the next day and been in custody since.
When the note was found, the Calhoun County Sheriff and Illinois State Police were called as were two regional bomb squads that searched the school but found nothing dangerous. The investigation by authorities quickly resulted in the arrest of Smith and the subsequent charges. Smith will be sentenced on December 15 and faces up to five years in jail, three years of supervised release and a $250-thousand fine.
