The Illinois approach to the Stan Musial Veteran’s Memorial Bridge has been named for former local Congressman Jerry Costello. He was viewed as instrumental in obtaining federal funding for the bridge that carries Interstate 70 across the Mississippi River.
During a ceremony last Friday, Costello says it was an honor to serve the area, but the naming probably has more meaning to his family:

The Belleville Democrat served in the U.S. House for 25 years, retiring in 2013. The sign bearing his name was unveiled with the help of a number of local, county, state and federal politicians. The Illinois General Assembly passed the honor for Costello in the spring.
Serving the areas of Alton, Godfrey, East Alton, Wood River, Roxana, Edwardsville, Jerseyville, Brighton, Bethalto, Grafton, Granite City, Hartford, Highland, Troy, Fairview Heights, Belleville and the surrounding cities.
