The two-year-old death of an Alton woman who was riding in a police car continues to be an issue for at least a handful of members of the city’s African-American community. 20-year-old Stephanie Hicks was fatally shot while riding in the vehicle near Dunn Road and Highway 367 in north St. Louis County in early July of 2012. After the shooting, she was taken to Barnes Jewish Hospital where she died.
Alton Police Chief Jason Simmons says the case was thoroughly investigated by the St. Louis County Police Department, St. Louis County State’s Attorney’s Office, and was presented to a St. Louis County grand jury in 2012.

Drawing on current events, Reverend Stanton Holliday, who represented the crowd of protestors, told the city council last night they wanted a further investigation into Hicks’ death.

Holiday says he hopes to take this case to the Justice Department for another look.
