An Alton lawmaker is promoting a newly created regional business district.  On January 1st, Tri-County Regional Port District became America’s Central Port District and now includes even more of the Riverbend.

Democrat State Representative Dan Beiser tells The Big Z the port district contacted several lawmakers to gain support for this expansion, which he believes will help boost the region’s economy:

Under the law, the Tri-County Regional Port District becomes America’s Central Port District, which would be granted the right to engage in economic development throughout Southwestern Illinois. The geographic boundaries would also be expanded to include Chouteau, Wood River, Godfrey, Elsah and Quarry Townships.

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated the district had not yet been formed, but the new law did create the district on January 1.
