The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a small plane crash east of Shipman on Sunday that claimed one life and resulted in injuries to a passenger.   The Macoupin County Coroner reports 66 year old Thomas Huebbe of St. Charles, Missouri, died at the scene after the plane went down around 4:15pm Sunday in a farm field just north of Route 16.

The report says the Blitzschney Model HB-24 two person plane was traveling from Taylorville on its way back to St. Charles when it experienced trouble.  The pilot attempted to land the plane in a harvested cornfield, but instead flipped on its roof in an unharvested area and stopped.  The plane went down in a field north of Route 16 near Stage Coach Road in Hilyard Township, about halfway between Shipman and Gillespie.  A passenger, 35 year old John Huebee of St. Peters, Missouri, the son of the pilot, was able to climb out of the wreckage and walk to a nearby farm house for help.  He was taken to Carlinville Area Hospital for treatment.  The FAA was on the scene last night and continues the investigation.
