The pilot of a small plane is lucky to be alive after being forced to bail out of his aircraft just moments before it crashed yesterday afternoon in Monroe County. The 19-year-old pilot parachuted to safety after the plane experienced mechanical problems and he was unable to land.
The pilot landed in a bean field after 3:15pm Tuesday and was not injured. The plane crashed about four miles away in a field, just a few hundred feet from a home in the small town of Fults. The plane originally took off from the Festus Airport in Crystal City and was from the Fly Free Skydiving Company. Last year, a pilot from the same company had to bail out of his plane when it experienced mechanical issues. The crash is under investigation.
