Doug TruaxA little-known candidate for U.S. Senate has won the endorsement of someone you’ve definitely heard of.  Doug Truax hasn’t run for office before. He’s vying for the Republican nomination to take on U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), and he’s endorsed in a three-minute video posted Thursday by cable TV talking head and former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

“A particular reason I’m excited about Doug’s candidacy is I believe he’s the perfect person to debate Dick Durbin this fall,” Gingrich says in the video.  Truax says the nod will help with voters unfamiliar with him. “He’s got a great reputation as a conservative and an innovative thinker, and if they (the voters) don’t know a whole lot about me, they trust that he spent some time with me and understands where I’m coming from,” he said.  Truax says he and Gingrich had dinner after they were introduced by a friend of a friend, and Gingrich was sufficiently impressed to offer his endorsement.

Truax, of Downers Grove, is a partner in a risk consulting firm in Oak Brook. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy.

State Sen. Jim Oberweis (R-Sugar Grove) is also running in the Republican primary March 18; the winner will face Durbin in November.
