Governor Pat Quinn has signed a bill that allows psychologists to prescribe medication to patients. The legislation was sponsored by both Senator Don Harmon and Representative John Bradley. Under the new measure psychologists have to get special training for prescription writing and will be required to work with a coordinating doctor.
The Illinois State Medical Society is the bill's biggest critic claiming psychologists don't have enough medical training to safely dispense medication.
