There will be a new grocery store moving into the Hunterstown neighborhood of Alton, with a storefront on Ridge Street near Broadway. Located in the old Central Electric Building, Grassroots Grocery will serve an area that has not had many options over the years, according to Alton Main Street Executive Director Sarah McGibany, who is a member of this effort’s steering committee.
She says they are in the small space on the left side of the building, which is about 800 square feet.

In addition to serving the needs of the Hunterstown neighborhood, McGibany says there is also a market for those who have been driving to West County to get natural foods at places like Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s. This will be the retail component of the recently announced food hub, with the wholesale component operating out of the back of the building. Plans for a grand opening are tentatively set for sometime in July.
Serving the areas of Alton, Godfrey, East Alton, Wood River, Roxana, Edwardsville, Jerseyville, Brighton, Bethalto, Grafton, Granite City, Hartford, Highland, Troy, Fairview Heights, Belleville and the surrounding cities.
