A number of businesses in Mount Olive took damage last May from an EF-2 tornado. The Macoupin Economic Development Partnership has been helping those businesses. The business district has several wood and brick buildings, and has the historic small town downtown feel, according to Shari Albrecht, Executive Director of the Partnership.

The National Weather Service reports the twister was on the ground for about a minute, traveling a mile or so. The storm was suspected of causing a fire that destroyed three buildings in the downtown area on North Street, but no injuries were reported. The storm also blew in eight fire bay doors at the Mount Olive Fire Department, and damaged the police station.
