Illinois State Senator Kyle McCarter has jumped into the race for Congress. McCarter, a Republican from Lebanon, will challenge longtime Congressman, and fellow Republican, John Shimkus in the spring primary. Shimkus has been in Congress since 1997.
McCarter toured the 15th Congressional District Wednesday, which stretches from Danville to Marion, and from Highland to the Indiana state line, to make his formal announcement. He represents the 54th state Senate district, which mostly lies within the 15th Congressional District, and has been in office since replacing Frank Watson in 2009. Prior to that, McCarter was on the St. Clair County Board. He owns his own manufacturing company. Before being elected to Congress, Shimkus was Madison County Treasurer, and has also been a teacher.
