State Senator Sam McCann has filed legislation in Springfield that would require all schools have approved carbon monoxide detectors in all buildings where students are present.  Last week, more than 150 students and staff at a Macoupin County school were hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning.

McCann, a Carlinville Republican, says this legislation could help insure there isn’t a next time.

The Illinois State Fire Marshall would determine the exact placement of the detectors, as well as develop a list of approved models.  Exemptions would be provided for buildings with no source of carbon monoxide.
