"When thunder roars, go indoors."  It is that phrase that emergency officials hope will keep you safe as tomorrow begins Lightning Safety Week in Illinois.  Lightning can strike as far as 10 miles away from the storm, so when you start hearing thunder, you need to get inside.

Ameren Illinois Spokesman Brian Bretsch says there is always the potential for an outage and downed power lines following a storm.  If you see downed lines, call 1-800-755-5000.  He says you should also put together a “storm kit.”

He says Ameren offers text and e-mail outage alerts.  Most emergency officials also recommend you keep a battery powered radio on hand as well.
