Looking at the expected growth in river commerce, Lewis & Clark Community College is preparing to launch a Maritime Institute in about a year.  Approval to pursue the project was given this week by the college’s Board of Trustees.  Some safety training aspects of the program could begin before that through the college’s existing programs based at St. Louis Regional Airport in Bethalto.

College President Dr. Dale Chapman tells The Big Z training would include high-level pilot training geared toward the unique aspects of this section of the country.

He says they are formalizing agreements right now.  The college plans to work in concert with Frank Miles, the Madison County Community Development Administrator, and Madison County Regional Superintendent of Schools Bob Daiber.  Funding is being pursued through the Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration.
