A new group of potential defendants is upset with a new law allowing injured workers to sue third parties – including trade associations – that provide safety training. The governor signed it as lobbyist Margaret Vaughn was scheduling a news conference to urge him to veto the bill.
“This law is just going to erode” worker safety, Vaughn says, and “lead to more injuries and possible death and also increase a lot of OSHA fines. They hire these safety consultants to ensure they are OSHA compliant.”

Vaughn's clients include the Illinois Firefighters Association, whose president, Colona chief John Swan, described the law as a solution in search of a problem, saying it will only benefit “the trial lawyers' association and the insurance industry.”
Vaughn and her clients said they would try to get lawmakers to amend the law.
