Charges have been filed in the death of an Illinois State Police Trooper from Madison County. 52 year old Johnny Felton, Junior, of Hinesville, Georgia, was indicted Monday in Montgomery County Court with two counts of reckless homicide in the death of Trooper Kyle Deatherage of Highland last November on Interstate 55 north of Litchfield.
The Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office alleges Felton (pictured) was driving his semi-truck northbound when it struck Trooper Deatherage as he was making a traffic stop on the side of the highway. Officials say Deatherage was a motorcycle officer and was on the side of the Interstate with his emergency lights activated at the time of the incident. He died at the scene. Felton is also facing charges in connection with driving without a valid commercial drivers license that did not allow him to transport outside of the state of Georgia. Felton faces anywhere from probation to up to 14 years on the reckless homicide charges, and up to three years on the driving charge. Felton was taken into custody this morning in Georgia and has waived extradition and will be transported to Illinois to face charges.
