Five fishing and boating sites around the state have been voted among the best in the country for families. The top 100 list of family fishing and boating spots was put together by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation based on online polls.
To Dan Stephenson, assistant chief of fisheries with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, having five fishing spots on the list shows the state’s strength when it comes to water recreation.

“To be in the top hundred, there’s really a recognition that we’ve got some really sites here (for) both boat and fish,” Stephenson said, “and are relatively close to the larger metropolitan areas.”
The highest-ranking spot in Illinois is Starved Rock State Park (#12), followed by Fox Chain O’Lakes in Spring Grove (#16), North Point Marina in Winthrop Harbor (#31), Johnson Sauk Trail in Kewanee (#52), and the Monee Reservoir (#70).
