Students who leave Illinois to attend college tend to be stronger academically than those who stay in the state, according to a new study. SIU Edwardsville’s Illinois Education Research Council found that students who left Illinois and graduated college between 2006 and 2010 were significantly less likely to return once they got their degree.
Eric Lichtenberger, co-author of the study, says one solution is to nab students from neighboring states.
Lichtenberger says the study also found that those with degrees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics – the STEM fields – were even less likely to return to Illinois once they left.
