Illinois ranks 15th in the nation when it comes to making sure its elderly citizens can live independently at home, according to a new scorecard put out by AARP. The group's associate state director for Illinois, David Vinkler, says the state is investing in home-based community services.

Vinkler says it makes sense to invest in home care options because people would rather stay in their own homes than live out their days in a nursing home. He says even with the good ratings, Illinois could afford to step it up in other areas. For example, he says there are many people in nursing homes who don’t need much care. Vinkler says it would be a good idea for the state to get those residents more home-based options.
