The new head of the state’s department of Central Management Services got an earful from lawmakers over the agency’s inability to keep accurate records of the property the state owns.   Representatives from Central Management Services, or CMS, appeared before an Illinois House committee as a follow-up to an audit released last year.  CMS is in charge of a lot of things, including overseeing the state’s property. The audit found the agency’s records were missing a number of properties – for instance, almost all of the Illinois’ universities.

CMS said they needed a new computer program to better track these properties but didn’t have $5 million to pay for it. State Rep. Jack D. Franks (D-Woodstock) called that nonsense.  “Can we agree that we don’t need to spend $5 million to put together an Excel spreadsheet?” asked Franks.  Franks wants the agency back before his State Government Administration committee in a couple of weeks, with an accurate Excel spreadsheet in hand.
