Low-income families across the state of Illinois struggle to find healthy, affordable food. That burden could be lessened for local families if organizers behind an effort to bring a Grassroots Grocery, a cooperative grocery store, to Alton meet their financial goal.
Alton Main Street Executive Director Sara McGibany serves on the steering committee for Grassroots Grocery. She says the fundraiser is off to a strong start.

McGibany says the organization has found a space on Ridge Street that will become the store once they secure enough funding. She adds that the store will be open to the public but that there will be memberships available for $100. For more information or to make a donation you can visit http://www.grassrootsgrocery.org
