Con artists have apparently targeted some residents in the Riverbend in recent weeks, trying to lure them into the "Grandparent Scam." The scam involves a person saying they are in trouble in some far-away location and needs money wired to them. In this most recent case, the scammers contacted area residents, under the ruse that they were in jail and needed thousands of dollars for bail money.
Better Business Bureau Investigator Bill Smith says this is a familiar scheme, and they can be very convincing.

He says if you get a call or e-mail from someone claiming to be a grandchild in trouble, double-check their story. This scam has been around since about 2008, and has continually evolved.
