The Republican candidates for governor are in favor of term limits for legislators, but each has his own version.  State Treasurer Dan Rutherford says he supports term limits as a way to prevent politicians from holding leadership posts for decades, singling out Illinois House Speaker Michael Madigan.  “When you really step back and (ask) what is the issue and the challenge in Springfield is the fact that we’ve had the speaker of the House and perhaps some could even say the president of Senate be in there for decades,” Rutherford said.

State Sen. Bill Brady (R-Bloomington) argues that imposing term limits means looking to the Illinois Constitution, not the General Assembly. “Regardless of what Treasurer Rutherford says, you’re never going to see Mike Madigan or (Illinois Senate President) John Cullerton impose term limits on legislative leaders,” Brady said.  State Sen. Kirk Dillard (R-Hinsdale) also supports term limits, while Bruce Rauner wants a measure on term limits included on the ballot in November.
