An overnight pursuit that began late Monday night in Godfrey ended with a near head on crash in West Alton early Tuesday morning.  The Madison County Sheriff's Department says it was initially called out to the report of a home invasion, and police pursued the vehicle to the Clark Bridge where it was called off, but police in St. Louis County spotted the vehicle and it turned tail to head back to Alton.

Sheriff's Department Captain Mike Dixon says it apparently began when a female called them saying a former male acquaintance forced his way into her home in the 2800 block of Gerson in Godfrey Monday around 11:30pm:

Dixon says deputies called off the pursuit after the truck crossed the Clark Bridge, but St. Louis County Police spotted the Chevy Silverado near Highway 367 and Parker Road and began a pursuit north toward Alton. It continued on Highway 67 into St. Charles County and at Highway 94 in West Alton, the pickup truck switched to driving northbound in the southbound lanes while officers remained on the upper lanes.  The truck collided nearly head on with a delivery box truck about a mile south of the Clark Bridge.  The accident happened just around 12:40am Tuesday. The driver of the suspect vehicle has been identified by the Missouri Highway Patrol as 44 year old Steven Roswell of Bethalto who was taken to Barnes Jewish Hospital in St. Louis with serious injuries.  The driver of the box truck, 22 year old Kenneth Jones of Godfrey was not injured.

The Alton Fire Department was among first responders on the scene earlier this morning.  Madison County authorities say the suspect's injuries are not life threatening and could face formal charges once the case is presented to the State's Attorney's Office.
