The price of gas hasn’t changed much over the last month, but it’s lower than it was a year ago.  The Illinois average is now $3.38, down from $3.40 a month ago, and down from $3.71 last year at this time, according to the Triple-A Fuel Gauge Report. Triple-A spokesman Beth Mosher says this is because of reduced demand, as people drive less in the cold weather.

“What we’ve seen over the past month or so is a lot less driving, given the conditions – many kids home from school, parents staying home from work, and just less driving in general due to the cold weather,” she said.  Mosher says people are travelling, especially to go someplace warm, but they’re going by plane, not by car. They’re also probably not noticing the price being cheaper than last year because it’s a hard thing to remember, and because they’re probably spending the savings on higher home heating costs.
