Crews from Alton's Public Works Department overlaying a portion of Brown Street between Main and Washington Avenue in Upper Alton Friday received an unexpected visitor when a driver went through barricades, damaging freshly laid asphalt. Alton Police describe the suspect as a white man driving a silver Chevrolet Malibu. Authorities say the man cursed and flashed obscene gestures at several workers after driving through about 80 feet of freshly poured asphalt. Officials with the Public Works Department say the incident endangered the lives of those working on the project and also forced crews to re-pour and re-roll asphalt in the impacted area, which raises the total cost of the project.
