Unnecessary pain and school absences can be two side effects of oral health problems, according to Illinois Public Health officials. National studies show that around 10-million school days are lost each year due to student dental problems, whether it be from infection and decay, or a child being teased about missing and rotten teeth.
State Oral Health Director Doctor David Miller says remedying this begins with the basics.

Miller says the biggest misconception parents have is that taking care of baby teeth isn’t important, since they will eventually fall out. But he says establishing good habits at a young age and creating a strong base for permanent teeth to come in is vital for a lifelong healthy mouth.
