If you’re selling yourself as a health business, you can probably do without cigarettes for sale. That’s how a number of experts see the decision of drug store chain CVS to drop tobacco products from its stores. “Starbucks doesn’t sell jeans, because it’s not consistent with their image,” says Dyanne Ferk, assistant dean of the Department of Business Administration at the University of Illinois at Springfield.

She says CVS sees itself as “a health care provider, a health care products provider, and having those cigarettes on the shelf is not consistent.” Ferk says losing $2 billion worth of business – out of more than $120 billion – may be palatable, as CVS stands to gain from opening “minute clinics” in its stores; you could get a quick doctor visit and then go straight to the pharmacy.
