Illinois may be ready for same-sex marriage, but it's apparently not ready to keep parents from pursuing “conversion therapy” to get their gay kids to switch to straight. State Rep. Kelly Cassidy (D-Chicago) says sexual orientation is inborn, not made. But State Rep. Jeanne Ives (R-Wheaton), the only dissenter to speak up, says the legislature should run far, far away from the idea of outlawing this practice.

“This is stuff that we should not be legislating on at all,” Ives said. “We have no purview in this department. We have no expertise in this department. It’s absolutely something that should not ever be legislated on. Let people decide for themselves what they need to have for themselves.” Cassidy, a lesbian who said later it was an understanding priest who helped her and her mother cope with life together, said the experts have indeed spoken – and all have debunked the idea of “conversion therapy.”
