A light agenda gave Village leaders and emergency responders in Bethalto a chance to recognize a Good Samaritan during Monday evening’s board meeting. Lou Thery was given the Meritorious Citizens Award for his actions on November 9, 2013. Thery was traveling through the 5000 block of Buchta Road in Bethalto when he came upon the scene a serious car accident that claimed the life of 16-year old Samantha Owsley and sent four other teens to the hospital.
Chief Smock, Bethalto Fire Chief Rich Mersinger, officers from the Bethalto Police Department and firefighters from the Bethalto Fire Department lined up to shake Thery’s hand following the presentation of the award. Bethalto Mayor Alan Winslow says citizens like Thery are a “rare breed” and that honoring him for his actions was the least the Village could do.
