Nine prison inmates and four guards are recovering in area hospitals today after the bus they were riding in crashed early Sunday on Interstate-64 in St. Clair County near Milepost 19. The federal prisoners were on their way from Jefferson City, Missouri to a facility in Kentucky when the bus overturned around 5:00am. One of the guards was transported to St. Louis in serious condition.
Three other guards were transported to Memorial Hospital in Belleville for treatment. Five of the inmates are under guard in St. Louis hospitals, and the four others were taken to the St. Clair County Jail pending transportation to their original destination. The Illinois State Police reports the driver apparently lost control of the wheel causing him to leave the roadway and strike a bridge support located in the center median. The transport bus flipped over on its left side. The eastbound lanes of I-64 were closed for about four hours. The bus was owned by a private company that was contracted to transport the prisoners.
