Bluff City Minerals will be expanding their mining efforts at the quarry just off of College Avenue in Alton following last night’s action by the Alton City Council. After a layover at the August 13 meeting, the council voted 4-2 to permit blasting to resume in an area close to the Milton area. Aldermen David Boulds and Gary Fleming oppose the plan.
Boulds says a company representative explained what they would be doing to minimize impact on area residents, but not to his satisfaction.

The plan is to mine 300 feet to the south and then work east, away from the Milton area. Bluff City also retains the right to place an airshaft on the north side of Illinois Route 140, similar to the one at Gordon Moore Park near the baseball diamonds. The city will receive $32,000 in rock to be used in the Public Works Department.
