Legislation prompting discussion of creating another Big 10 school in Illinois has cleared the Illinois Senate. The measure creates a commission to look into the possibility of having another of the state’s universities join the U of I in the Big 10. Senator Matt Murphy of Palatine says the U of I has become so competitive, students wanting to stay in Illinois need an alternative.

Northwestern is also in the Big 10, but is a private university. The bill now moves to the House for a vote.
