June, July and August are the peak of vacation season and the Alton Police Department is reaching out to the public to make sure their homes are safe while they are away. Public Information Officer Emily Hejna says people have gotten into the habit of posting pictures and statuses on social media, which is a signal to burglars that no one is home.
She recommends waiting to post all vacation photos until you are home from your trip.

Hejna also recommends that you take additional steps to protect yourself from being burglarized while on vacation. She says that you should either stop mail service or have someone pick up your mail, put a few lights on timers and do anything you can to make it look like life at your house is going on as usual.
