The Alton - Godfrey Fireworks on the Mississippi will proceed as usual this year in Alton, and there are a few changes to the program. In recent years, the festival was turned into a fundraiser for programs at Alton High School, as well as the Park & Recreation Departments in Alton and Godfrey. That is not the case this year, with the organization having been handed back to the city.
Another change is in how traffic will be handled, according to Alton Fire Chief Bernie Sebold.
He says no pedestrian traffic will be allowed on the bridge, and cars will not be allowed to park there either. The event includes music at the Amphitheater by Borderline, which is a country music cover band, as well as food and drink for sale on the grounds. The vendors will begin selling their wares at 5pm. The concert starts at 6:00, and is free. The fireworks begin at dusk. In case the weather would cause a postponement, everything would be moved to July 5.
