The Alton School District has a new plan to deal with winter weather starting next school year. While it maintains the option of calling off classes for inclement weather, it will also be able to announce a delayed start. This will enable the district to avoid using a full emergency day when there’s a chance roads and school property could be prepared in time for classes to begin after 10am.
The delayed start schedule adopted this week by the Alton School Board would mean a school day start of 10am for elementary schools, 10:30am for Alton Middle School, and 10:35am for Alton High School. The Motivational Achievement Center (MAC) would begin at 11:30am and morning classes would be cancelled for the Early Childhood Center. In addition, in case of bad weather in the afternoon, the district could announce an early dismissal schedule of 12:25pm for elementary grades, the MAC at 12:30pm, 1:05pm for Alton High and 1:15pm for the middle school, with no early childhood classes in the afternoon. The first day of school for the 2014-2015 school year is Wednesday August 20th.
