Ladies of all ages, If you missed the Kentucky Derby this year, you can attend the Jersey Derby right here at our 147th Annual Jersey County Fair, on Saturday and participate in the "Hat Parade." The 2nd Annual JERSEY DERBY, in the grand tradition of the KENTUCKY DERBY Horse Races will be featured again this Year at the Jersey County Fair Harness Races. The event will take place on Saturday, July 11, 2015 prior to the actual Horse Races which start promptly at 1:00 pm from the Grandstand at the Jersey County Fair Grounds.Our 2015 Madame Parade Marshall Martha Harpstrite will be among the Judges of this year's contest.
While an outstanding field of Standardbred Harness Horses are "chomping at the bit" for a trip to the Winner's Circle, our fair ladies of the Jersey Derby will be registering for the "Hat Parade" at the Pavilion south of the Grandstand, where the ladies will enjoy light refreshments and be photographed by our official Derby Photographer, Jody Jedlicka. Each participant will be beautifully illustrated on the Jersey County Fair Face Book page.
Judging of the Hats will take place during the Grandstand Hat Parade where contestants will enter the front of the Grandstand from the west and Promenade to the east side of the Grandstand, allowing all the spectators to view the hats. Hats can be as simple or as elaborate as you prefer. Winners of the Hat Parade will be awarded flowers in between the races. The Categories include Most Traditional, Most Original, Most Elegant and Most Outrageous. This year we are encouraging Mothers and Daughters to enter and coordinate their Hats. A Children?s Category will be added this year and the winners of the Children's "Hat Contest" will be issued Midway armbands as a special treat.
Men are welcome to put on their "Derby" hat and escort your "Fair Lady."
Bouquet Flowers donated by Peg's Flower Cottage and Grandstand decoration plants provided by Dave Galbreath of the Plant Stand. This year our Senior and Junior Beauty Queen contestants will be participating, as well, so we will get a preview of their Jersey Derby Attire and their creative talents. Everyone will get a "Sneak Preview" of the Pageant participants.
As an added bonus for participation, Ladies, young and old, who register for the "Hat Parade" and wear their hats into the Fairground, will get in the gate "free!" There is no charge for the Grandstand on Saturday! The names of all "Hat" participants will placed in a Lottery box. Prizes will be given out throughout the races to winners whose names are drawn after each race.
Schedule for the Derby Participants 12:00 - 12:30: A Silver Bowl Reception. (Punch and cookie Reception under the Pavilion) (includes Hat Registration and photos with a Harness Horse Celebrity) 12:40 pm. Assemble Parade at west end of Grandstand 12:45 pm. - Grandstand "Parade of Hats" before Spectators and Judges, including reigning Miss Jersey County Lauren Kight, Little Miss Jersey County AnnaLee Green, and the 2015 Miss Jersey County Contestants 12:55 pm: The National Anthem: Cindy Minor 1:00 pm. The Races begin!
