Alfresco Productions Brings “THE LAST FIVE YEARS”, A Contemporary Musical About the Highs and Lows of Marriage to the Granite City Stage.
THE LAST FIVE YEARS is an honest, intimate and moving musical snapshot of love gained and lost .The show stars theater veterans Stephanie Sullivan as Cathy Hyatt – a struggling, gentile actress and Scott Tripp as Jamie Wellerstein – a rising, Jewish novelist. Through the course of 14 songs, they separately tell their own account of their five-year relationship. From the whimsical excitement of Jamie’s “Shiksa Goddess” to Cathy’s crushingly vulnerable “Still Hurting,” the lovers explore their emotionally complex romance through beautifully haunting music and fresh, ingenious lyrics by Jason Robert Brown. The story uses a unique form of storytelling in which we see Cathy’s story told in reverse chronological order (beginning the show at the end of the marriage), and Jamie’s as told in chronological order (beginning just after the couple's first date). Their opposing timelines meet only once in the middle of the show as Jamie proposes, Cathy says yes and they still believe in happily ever after. In short, The Last 5 Years is a musical for a every generation. It asks age-old questions about relationships in a new way... Can a relationship endure an extra-marital affair? What happens when one half is catapulted to moderate fame and the other half doesn't quite fulfill their own dreams? Can a mother-in-law survive her Jewish son marrying a shiksa temptress? Funny and honest, the work examines a relationship where professional and personal passions collide and bring piercing and unexpected challenges. This modern day “ I Do, I Do ” with Its two actor cast make it as small and intimate as a musical can get. But, unlike I Do, I Do which chronicled a fifty-year marriage that despite downs as well as ups endured "until death do us part”, this love story is more bitter than sweet
You will not want to miss THE LAST FIVE YEARS playing at Alfresco Art Center, 2401 Delmar Ave., Granite City. All general admission tickets for all three performances on August 22, 23 and 24 are $10.00 and begin at 8pm. Doors will open at 7pm. On opening night, August 22nd, Alfresco is offering VIP tickets for $25.00 which includes the performance, priority reserved seating on the main floor or Mezzanine, hors d'oeuvres buffet, wine tasting, and private access to club 21. Tickets may be reserved by calling (618) 560-1947. Tickets may also be purchased at the Garden Gate Tea Room or at the door on the day of performance. VIP tickets must be purchased by August 15th.
