About Us

The Hayner Public Library District has something for everyone!

Books & Media

The library offers an extensive collection of books, eBooks, magazines, DVDs, music CDs, large print books, audio CDs, databases, newspapers, and other materials for all ages. The library also offers special programming for adults, teens, and children including story times, craft times, computer classes, special interest classes, musical performances, and lectures. All library locations offer free Wi-Fi and public computer use. We even offer a Bow-wow Pow-wow at 10 a.m. on the second Saturday of every month! At Bow-wow Pow-wow, kids can read to certified therapy dogs at our Alton Square Library; it’s a great time and a terrific way to strengthen reading skills for all ages.

Services

You will be able to find notary services, fax services, voter registration, and test proctoring. Their sister library in Alton Square Mall also has two study rooms available and free one-on-one reference services. All library programs and services (with the exception of notary, fax, and printing services) are free.

Hayner Public Libraries also offer Sunshine Express Homebound Delivery Service, delivering library materials directly to your home. This free service is available to patrons who live within the library district’s service area who are either temporarily or permanently unable to visit the library.

Genealogy & History

Our Genealogy & Local History Library offers a variety of genealogy-related services and local history resources to support your research efforts. Our collection includes books on local railroads and streetcars, steamboats on the Mississippi, notable Altonians, local architecture, and more. The Genealogy & Local History Library’s collection includes the Alton Telegraph Archives dating as far back as 1836, and Access Newspaper Archive to locate newspaper articles in other parts of the country. We also offer Ancestry® Library Edition, HeritageQuest Online™, and Digital Sanborn® Maps. One-on-one genealogy and local history research sessions are also available at the Genealogy & Local History Library.
