Poetry Out Loud is a national recitation contest where high school students learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. It was created by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. It is a program sponsored by the Illinois Arts Council. Through participation in Poetry Out Loud, students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage. The contest also seeks to address concerns about decreasing reading rates among this age group.
