Caring Citizens Come Together to Volunteer and Inspire
Alton's Caring Corps to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King at Basketball Game
(Alton, IL - January 12, 2010) As a result of Greg Mortensons visit to Alton, a group of caring citizens representing local agencies, churches, and companies have come together to form the Alton Caring Corps. The goal of this committee is to inspire and to provide volunteer opportunities to children, youth, and adults.
The Alton Caring Corps has already conducted or assisted with two successful community events. Our first event was to assist with the canned good drive for Alton Marketplaces Annual Tree Lighting. Caring Corps members dropped off collection boxes and assisted with activities the night of the Tree Lighting.
During the week of December 7, the Alton Caring Corps organized a Christmas Caroling effort. Local choir groups went to nursing homes and hospitals to bring holiday cheer. Some of the songs sung include Silent Night, Joy to the World, and several other holiday favorites!
The Alton Caring Corps is planning a large event on January 18, 2010, in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Day. As part of the event, students will be volunteering at local non-profit agencies. Select students will also receive school supplies to assist them in the second half of the school year. The key event will be the 1st Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Day Exhibition Basketball game. The game will feature a keynote address from Bobby Collins. The game itself will be the Alton High School Athletics against the Alton Police and Fire Departments.
Alton Mayor Tom Hoechst said, I am very pleased with the efforts of the Alton Caring Corps. The Castle of Cans at the Christmas tree lighting and the caroling at nursing homes and hospitals were wonderful volunteer opportunities. The Dr. Martin Luther King Day should also be a wonderful volunteer opportunity. I encourage everyone to donate school supplies to help those individuals that need these items for their education.
