(May 14, 2008) Mexico Village People are excited to announce our 3rd Annual Family Health, HIV and Kidney Expo. This event will be held Saturday, July 26, 2008 at Alton Square Mall. We are proud to say again this year that State Senator William Haines and State Representative Dan Beiser are supporters of this event.
Last year, we were able to reach 150 � 200 people in this community. We did 75 free Kidney Screening, 25 free Prostrate Cancer Screening, 45 free Blood Pressure Screening, 35 free Blood Glucose and we had variety of information tables. We were able to broadcast over the radio station and feed the attendee�s.
Last year we reached mostly the Alton Area, but this year we are trying to reach Alton, East Alton and beyond. This year, for the first time, we are going to be doing youth physicals for school, if they have a medical card. The physicals will be conducted by Madison County Health Department and The Nursing Department of Lewis and Clark Community College. SIU Dental School is going to do free Dental Screening including Oral Cancer Screening and free haircuts.
This annual community event is to enhance the quality of life and health, to empower families to live longer and healthier. Our target is low income families. Our focus again will be on Heart Disease, Diabetes, High Blood Pressure, Kidney Disease, HIV/AIDS, Cancer and preparing Youth for school. Our objective is to plant seeds of awareness that will prevent disease or slow progression through empowerment. (Knowledge)
We have Dr. Erik Daniels speaking on how High Blood Pressure and Diabetes are the leading cause of Kidney Failure and other speakers, we plan to have many different health screenings, we plan to feed up to 200 people by Julia�s Banquet, we will also being contracting with Foxy 95.5 to do our advertising along with the Alton Evening Telegraph . The radio station will be giving us again this yea r, and for a donation of a $150.00 or more they will provide 30 second of air time. We are also having a Community Resource Table asking business and organization to set up tables in the Mall to let the community be aware of their services. We are asking for a $50.00 donation to offset the cost of advertising and food.
