The Audi TT

Adam Andre Gives us the ins and outs of the Audi TT

The new Audi TT is all grown up since it was first introduced into Audi's lineup in 1998. The current design is in it last year and there will be no 2007 model. The new design will sell as a 2008. Audi has really turned up the heat on its new designs. They are getting sleeker and more aggressive. Much of the TT's new design characteristics are barrowed from the R8 and LeMans concept vehicles.

Audi interiors truly set the standard for the automotive industry. The TT's interior trim in is very well laid out. My favorites are the shift knob, the A/C vents framed in metal rings and the mirror signals. You rotate the rings to open or close the vents. Course I'm always mesmerized by xenons too. The Nappa leather is beautiful and holds you in your seat (available in red). It also allows for a firm grip on the steering wheel. The TT now features power seats on the driver side for the first time and more easily operated climate controls in the center console, which is now angled slightly toward the driver. Also new is a digital speedometer in the standard driver information system between the large speedometer and tachometer.

There are two engines available. First, a 200hp, 2.0 turbocharged DOHC 16 valve I-4 with 207 ft-lb of torque with 0-62 time in 6.4 seconds. Second, a 250hp 3.2L DOHC 24 valve V-6 with 236 ft-lb of torque getting you to 62 in 5.7 seconds. The 3.2 can also be mated to a newly refined version of Audi's superb S tronic twin-clutch automanual six-speed transmission. Capable of changing gears in 2 tenths of a second. Paddle shifters are included behind the steering wheel. Audi's famous Quattro all-wheel drive is availible with the 3.2. The new model is largely based on components from the VW Golf and Passat. The new TT has an all new steel and aluminum Audi Space Frame that is 69% aluminum and weighs 48% less than an all steel body. The TT's structure is aluminum from the B-pillar forward. Behind the B-pillar is mostly steel. This allows for better weight distribution. The new 2.0 weighs about 200 pounds less, and the 3.2 about 300 pounds less than the current model. The total weight is around 3000lbs depending on how the car is equipped.

The new TT has also seen much improvement on the track. This can be credited to the new lower center of gravity, multilink rear suspension, longer wheelbase and wider track, larger wheels and tires, much bigger brakes (16-inch rotors on 2.0 and 17-inch on 3.2 quattro) and new electromechanical steering rack with speed-sensitive assistance. The suspension, has twin-tube gas shocks which is terriffic. You can also get Audi's new magnetic ride shocks, similar to a system used in Cadillacs. A button on the center console lets you switch between Normal and Sport. Another change to help in this department, is a new spoiler which lifts out at 75mph and retracts flush when the car slows below 50.

The TT has available heated seats, xenon headlights, Sirus or XM radio, CD changer and cruise control. The headlights also have their own spray nozzels for cleaning. I'm sure navigaion will also be an option as many Audi's have that now. The 2008 Audi TT will go onsale in the US, April 2007 and will sell for an estimated, $35,000-$42,000. You will see the coupe initially, which will allow for three passengers. The convertible will come later as a 2-seat roadster. The look of the new TT is awesome, though im not complaining about the current design. The tail lights look similar, in shape, to those of the new 911s. I like Audi's new open grill design which is present in all new models. The TT has never had Viper power. Although it can still get your heart racing, it prides itself on being a classy, highly qualified road car with plenty of luxury amenities and great handling characteritics. If you ever get a date with the TT you better make sure you dress nice and brush your teeth because she might turn you down.
