Certificate of Appreciation
The Central Illinois Community Blood Center
presents Mandy Robinson
The Central Illinois Community Blood Center presented Mandy Robinson of Southwestern Illinois College, a Certificate of Appreciation at the blood drive SWIC sponsored on January 30, 2008. Forty two people came to the drive, and 30 good units of blood were collected. Since one unit of blood can be broken down into components that can help save up to three lives, this single drive potentially help ninety people. Thank you to everyone who participated with the drive.
The Central Illinois Community Blood Center supplies blood to 19 hospitals in central and southern Illinois including Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City and Memorial Hospital in Belleville.
SWIC has been hosting blood drives with the CICBC since 2005, and will host two more drives this year. The first will be held on June 18, 2008 from 10am -2pm and the second drive will be held on August 27th from 10 am -2pm. The need for blood is great -on any given day, an average of 39,000 units of red blood cells are needed in this country. Blood transfusions are often needed for trauma victims due to accidents and burns, heart surgery, organ transplants, and patients recovering from leukemia, cancer or other diseases such as sickle cell anemia. With an aging population and advances in medical treatments and procedures requiring blood transfusions, the demand for blood continues to rise.
To be eligible to donate blood a person must be in good health, must be 17 years old (16 with a signed parental consent form) and weigh at least 110 pounds. Whole blood can be donated every 56 days and platelets can be donated every two weeks. For more information you can contact the blood center at 618-659-0542 or visit our website at www.cicbc.org. For your convenience you can schedule an appointment, but walk-ins are always welcome and appreciated.
