(Alton October 19, 2009) � In a rare interview in 1966, playwright and director/actor, Woody Allen, said he drew inspiration from Shakespeare's uncanny ability to create two hours of hilarity out of a mistaken identity or error in judgment. Apologies to the Bard not-withstanding, Allen wrote his early classic comedy, DON'T DRINK THE WATER, with such cavalcading mishaps ensuing � but with characters that are accessible and hilarious. DON'T DRINK THE WATER has become a perennial favorite among community theaters and was first produced at Alton Little Theater in 1970 under the direction of ALT founder, Dorothy Colonius. The current production, with Director, Sue Mueller, at the helm features a well-rounded mixture of ALT comic "veterans" including, Tonya Nix, Randy Hoven, Dennis Franz, Greg Gaddy and Don Harlan with a generous dash of newcomers to the ALT stage.
The premise of this well-timed revival is that the Hollander family of New Jersey ( think Chevy Chase in "Vacation behind the Iron Curtain") finds themselves in deep water ( and disguises) from the simple act of taking a tourist photograph in the wrong place. Throw in some Espionage, a mad chef, political protestors, a cranky Secret Service chief, some loony Embassy inhabitants, and true love � and you've got the makings of a farce worth repeating!
Woody Allen's 1960's time capsule of comedy opens November 13th at the Alton Little Theater Showplace and runs through November 22nd, with seven evening performance at 7:30pm and matinees on Sunday, November 15th and Sunday, November 22nd at 2pm.
