On Our Daily Show, Hayner Public Library District’s Lacy Spraggins-McDonald discusses “Journey to Freedom: Illinois’ Underground Railroad,” an exhibit hosted at Alton City Hall. The conversation explains how the Underground Railroad was a network of safe places and routes—not a literal train—and highlights local history, including abolitionist and freedom seeker Priscilla Baltimore and the Rocky Fork community in Godfrey. A related Rocky Fork display is planned for Hayner’s Genealogy and Local History Library.
The exhibit’s opening reception is scheduled for October 1 at 6 p.m. at City Hall. Hayner also plans programs on pre-Civil War quilts and codes with Connie Martin on October 6, Illinois Freedom Road songs with Chris Vallillo on October 13, and the Underground Railroad in Alton with Charlotte Johnson on October 24. The first two talks require reservations; Lacy says details are available through Hayner’s website and newsletter.
