Yvonne Kay Meckfessel (nee Scherer), 79, of Troy, IL, born on November 17, 1946, in Claremont, IL, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2026 in her home, surrounded by loved ones.
Yvonne married her dear husband, Gary Meckfessel, on February 7, 2003, and they began their married life spending a good portion of their time caring for the family farm, where they once housed as many as 14 horses. She was no stranger to the hustle and bustle of operating a farm, as she grew up on one in her hometown of Claremont, IL, and even had a pet lamb, Iona, who she treated like a puppy.
When Yvonne and Gary were not out tending to the horses or taking them to Cowboy Mounted Shooting events, she enjoyed—and exceled at—a plethora of hobbies. She was a writer and self-published several books through her own company, Wild Child Publishing. Yvonne also enjoyed photography, her favorite subjects to capture were wildlife, especially birds during their migration. Her photos won several contests and awards.
As the farm’s number of horses dwindled, Yvonne and her husband spent more of their time traveling the country. Her favorite places included the farm in Pike County, IL and Custer State Park in South Dakota.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil William and Edna Marie Scherer, nee Boatman, and her son, Jason Pitts.
Left to cherish Yvonne’s memory are her beloved husband, Gary Meckfessel; her sons, Eric (Babbs) Pitts and Brent (Sheri) Pitts; her step-daughters, Monica (Robert) Jones, Megan (Julio Naveira) Meckfessel, and Michele (Robert Paty) Meckfessel; her brother, Clif (Jane) Scherer, as well as his children, Amanda (Zach Kester) Maestro-Scherer and Larissa (Dan Sommers) Maestro-Scherer; grandchildren Brittany (Taylor) Akers, Sydney (Jason Shryock) Pitts, Hayley (Nathan Welch) Pitts, Clayton Pitts, Ellison Pitts, Margaret, Jack and Maribel Paty, and Mae Naveira; great grandchildren Conner Akers and Lexie Akers as well as her dear friends, Ginny Jennings and Darlene Burgener.
