William Wallace 'Wally' Simmons, 94, passed away 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 10, 2017 at Alton Memorial Hospital.
Born in Staunton on January 5, 1923, he was the son of William Jennings and Isabel (Dietz) Simmons.
After graduating high school, he served in the Air Force from 1942-68, which included tours during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. After retiring, he worked for the City of Wood River as an inspector, in the water department and park and recreation department.
He married June Frances Rogers on June 10, 1945. She died August 15, 2009.
Surviving are a son, William W., Jr. (Barbara) Simmons of Bethalto; daughter, Mary L. (Richard) Wilhite of Wood River; two grandchildren, Shannon (Shane) Dalton, Grant (Christine) Simmons; and four great grandchildren, Zachery and Connor Wells, Morgan and Ryan Simmons.
Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Marks Mortuary in Wood River where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday. Pastor Richard Newcom will officiate.
Burial will follow in Woodland Hill Cemetery.
