William Settles

William Joseph “Bill” Settles, age 76, of Belleville, MI, passed away under Hospice Care at home, surrounded by loved ones, on September 18, 2023.    He was born on August 9, 1947, in Cadillac, Michigan, to the late Harold K. and Lillie I. (DeBruyne) Settles.  Bill was a 1966 graduate of Saline High School, where he was a reporting officer for FFA (Future Farmers of America).

For most of his career, Bill worked as a Maintenance Mechanic in the Department of Recreational Sports at the University of Michigan.  Bill was a Cub Scout, a pitcher in Little League Baseball, and liked to fish.  He also enjoyed farming, John Deere and International Harvester tractors, gardening, traveling, antiquing, dancing, and mostly spending time with family and friends. Bill was a dairy farmer and herdsman before moving to Belleville in 1987.

Bill is survived by his wife of 52 years, Judy (Mills) Settles, his children: Stacie (Doug) Dubin of Sand Creek, MI, Sheila Settles of Brownstown Township, MI, and Scott Settles of Belleville, MI.

He was extremely proud of his five grandchildren: Daniel, Devin and Delayna Dubin, Kailee and Kasey Settles.

He is also survived by his brothers: Phillip, George (Dolores), and Peter (Sherrian) Settles; a sister Laura (James) Bohnett, a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as cherished neighbors and several longtime close friends.  

Bill is preceded in death by his brother Harold (Patricia) Settles, Jr., sisters: Alfreda (Eugene) Steinacher, and Dolores (Rod) Blankenship; also, a sister-in-law Mimi Settles.  Mr. Settles was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Belleville.

Visitation will be at David C. Brown Funeral Home, Belleville, MI on Monday, September 25, 2023, from 3-8 PM. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at 11:00 AM with visitation from 10-11 AM.  Rev. George “Chip” Dischinger will officiate. Interment will be at Cadillac Memorial Gardens-West in Westland, MI at 2:30 PM Tuesday.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Michigan and would be appreciated.
