William Bettorf

William Robert “Bill” Bettorf, 73, died suddenly at 9:30 p.m., Monday, December 12, 2016 at his home in Jerseyville.

He was born on January 24, 1943 in Hartford, of four children born to William Harrison & Imogene (Cheek) Bettorf .

Bill was a lifelong resident of Jersey County and graduated with the class of 1961 from Jersey Community High School. He then began his working career with Laclede Steel as a Millwright where he retired in 1987 after dedicating 27 years of service.

He was an avid sports enthusiast and in his spare time enjoyed spending time on the open road on his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He relished in the stories and the memories he created with his many friends throughout the years, many of which grew to refer to him as “Wyl Bill”, and was particularly fond of the time he spent at the Alton Motorboat Club where he was a member for many years.

It was the company of his family, especially that of his grandchildren, however, that brought Bill the greatest joys in life.

Surviving are four children and their spouses, Bill Bettorf of Godfrey; Bart & Tanya Bettorf of Wentzville, MO; Brian & Kari Bettorf of Grafton and Heather & John Plunk of Jerseyville; his father, William Harrison Bettorf of Granite City; nine grandchildren and a great-grandson on the way; a brother and sister-in-law, Randy & Debbie Bettorf of Granite City as well as a sister, Diane Jenkins of Jerseyville.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Imogene and a brother, Doug Bettorf.
